Motherhood is truly a gift, but along with the joy it brings, many mummies struggle with backache during pregnancy and even after giving birth. At our recent Glow Through Pregnancy event, Dr Marcus Ling, Spine Surgeon and Visiting Consultant Orthopaedic at Singapore General Hospital (SGH), shared his insights on why back pain happens and what mummies can do to ease it.

Why Do Pregnant Mums Experience Backache?

Here are some reasons that Dr Marcus explained:

  • Increased weight gain (around 12-15kg) adds extra load on the spine

  • Shifting of the centre of gravity forward, making it harder to balance

  • Tendency to lean backwards to compensate, straining the back muscles

  • Loosening of ligaments due to hormonal changes, especially from relaxin, making joints less stable

  • Poor posture from tiredness and carrying extra weight

  • Weakening tummy and pelvic floor muscles as they stretch to accommodate the growing baby

What about Postpartum Backache?

Even after giving birth, many mums continue to experience back pain because of:

  • Weak core and abdominal muscles after delivery

  • Repetitive bending and lifting when caring for their newborn

  • Poor breastfeeding posture, especially when hunched over for long periods

  • Sleep deprivation, which leads to muscle fatigue and tension

How can Mummies manage backache?

The good news is, back pain can be managed and minimised with simple lifestyle changes and awareness.

During Pregnancy:

✅ Maintain good posture

✅ Exercise regularly (suitable prenatal exercises)

✅ Use proper lifting techniques

✅ Wear supportive footwear

✅ Sleep on your side with a pillow between your legs

✅ Apply heat or cold packs when needed

Postpartum:

✅ Strengthen your core muscles gradually

✅ Optimise breastfeeding posture (support your back and arms with pillows)

✅ Use proper lifting techniques when carrying your baby

✅ Rest whenever possible to reduce muscle fatigue

Dr Marcus’ Message to Mummies

“Motherhood is a gift which should never be taken for granted. Despite the joy that it brings, many mummies suffer from backache during pregnancy as well as even after delivery. With proper education and precautions, the incidence of backache can be minimised. Do not let backache overshadow the positive experience of pregnancy and motherhood!”
